We build origin stories around long journeys and distant interventions, assuming life’s most delicate necessities could only be carried from afar. Physical reality reveals a simpler truth: the water was in the local dust all along.
The Foreign Myth For decades, standard planetary models assumed the inner solar system was too hot for water to survive the formation of Earth. To explain oceans, models invoked a dramatic external rescue: distant, icy bodies from beyond Jupiter bombarding a dry rock long after its creation, delivering life’s essential solvent from the frozen outer margins.
