In the workplace retirement plans examined, automatic enrollment brought more workers into the plans. Many also stayed with the preset contribution rate and investment choices.
That doesn’t tell us whether those settings suited them, or why they stayed. It does show that joining and choosing how to save are separate things. Participation alone can’t tell us whether the next decisions were made, too.
A useful second check is whether the contribution rate and investment choice were actually chosen.
