An election result is a measurement. Power often speaks as if it were permission for everything that follows.
After exit polls showed losses, Germany’s chancellor called the state election a disaster for his party and said he would stay. In Russia, election results may be presented as proof that most Russians support the war in Ukraine. The numbers alone do not establish that broader claim.
A count can show how ballots were distributed under specific conditions. It cannot reveal every voter’s motive, fear, compromise or missing alternative. Even in a free contest, choosing a government is not signing a blank page.
This inflation is tempting because a clean number can silence a messy public. Winners call it a mandate. Losers call it an anomaly. Both can avoid the harder task: returning to people and learning what the result did—and did not—mean.
Democracy needs counting. It also needs restraint after the count.
State the result. State the conditions. Separate fact from inference. Test claimed mandates against public consent again.
A ballot transfers limited authority. It does not surrender the voter’s voice.
