Where Am I?

A destination chosen outside a person’s known world turns orientation into the first return of agency.

An Iranian woman was flown in shackles to an African country she had not known existed. A US deportation deal chose the destination.

The first question waiting at the end of such a journey is smaller than policy and larger than a continent:

Where am I?

Knowing where you are is not trivia. It is the first piece of agency. The name of the place. Why you were brought there. Who knows you have arrived. Whom you can call. Where you will sleep. How you can object.

What awaited her after landing remains unknown. Do not fill that space with an invented rescue or an invented catastrophe. What is already clear is enough: the destination was outside her known world when the system selected it for her.

A humane arrival begins by returning coordinates: this is where you are; this is what is happening; this person can help; this is how you can challenge it; this is where you are safe tonight.

Without those coordinates, the shackles merely change material. Metal becomes disorientation.

A state may finish a flight. A human being has not arrived until she can locate herself inside what has been done to her.
