On a dry day, a wetland can look like spare ground.
When floodwater comes, it can become room: water spreads there and moves more slowly. Fill the wetland, and some of that room is gone. The loss can contribute to greater flood risk elsewhere.
How much—and where—depends on the wetland, its location, and the flood. What looks unused may already be making room for water.
